Trump special envoy says Denmark is occupying Greenland

(MENAFN) The US special envoy to Greenland, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, stated that Denmark is occupying Greenland in violation of United Nations rules, following remarks by President Donald Trump about acquiring the Arctic territory.

On Sunday, Trump said the United States would take control of Greenland “one way or another,” arguing that Copenhagen cannot adequately provide security for the world’s largest island, joking that it is defended by “two dog sleds.”

Landry later emphasized on social media that the United States protected Greenland during World War II. US military installations were established on the island in April 1941 under an agreement with Denmark, a year after the country was occupied by Nazi Germany. “History matters. The US defended Greenland’s sovereignty during WWII when Denmark couldn’t,” he wrote. He added that after the war, “Denmark re-occupied it – side stepping and ignoring UN protocol.”

The Danish ambassador to the United States, Jesper Moller Sorensen, responded by highlighting Greenland’s historical and legal status. He stated that “Greenland has been a part of the Kingdom of Denmark for centuries. That has repeatedly been recognized by US administrations, in the UN and internationally.” He noted that Greenland’s people, through a 2008 vote, overwhelmingly supported self-governance within the Kingdom.

Moller Sorensen also emphasized Denmark’s long-standing cooperation with the United States on security matters, recalling that Danish troops suffered significant losses in Afghanistan and Iraq as part of NATO missions. He concluded by urging continued collaboration on Arctic security challenges as “partners and allies.”
