Denmark PM Steps Down After Inconclusive Vote

(MENAFN) Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen formally tendered the government's resignation to King Frederik X on Wednesday, triggering a fresh round of coalition negotiations following Tuesday's inconclusive parliamentary election.

The handover took place at 10:15 local time (0915 GMT) at Amalienborg, the official royal residence in Copenhagen, according to a statement from the Danish royal house.

Having briefed the King on the election outcome, Frederiksen formally requested that all parties elected to the Folketing — Denmark's unicameral parliament — be permitted to present their positions on the formation of the next government.

Under Denmark's political tradition, government formation is guided largely by long-established convention rather than rigid constitutional procedure. Based on the recommendations gathered from party consultations, a designated negotiation leader — commonly referred to as a royal investigator — is appointed to assess the viability of potential governing coalitions. The process may require more than one round of consultations before a path forward is secured.

In the interim, Frederiksen will continue to serve in a caretaker capacity until a new government is formally installed.

Tuesday's vote left the 179-seat Folketing without a clear majority. Frederiksen's Social Democrats held their ground as the single largest party, claiming 38 seats, yet neither the left-leaning "red bloc" nor the right-leaning "blue bloc" managed to cross the 90-seat threshold required for an outright majority. The centrist Moderates, who secured 14 seats, are widely regarded as the pivotal kingmakers in the coalition negotiations ahead.
