US Pushes to Expand Army Access in Greenland
During a recent Senate hearing, Gregory Guillot indicated that Washington aims to broaden its military presence beyond the Pituffik Space Base in northern Greenland.
He explained that these talks are being conducted under the framework of a longstanding 1951 defense agreement between the two countries, describing the arrangement as “very advantageous” for US operations. He also noted that Danish and Greenlandic authorities have shown strong cooperation, adding that American requests have consistently been met so far.
His comments point to a possible easing of previous diplomatic tensions surrounding Greenland, particularly in the area of defense collaboration, as all parties appear to be moving toward a more practical and cooperative approach.
Although no exact sites were confirmed, analysts referenced in reports suggest that potential locations under consideration could include Narsarsuaq in the south, Kangerlussuaq in the southwest, and areas close to Pituffik. These locations are considered strategically valuable due to existing infrastructure such as airstrips and port facilities dating back to the Cold War era.
Meanwhile, Lars Lokke Rasmussen has received mixed reactions for his handling of relations with Washington, particularly for opting to manage disagreements over Greenland through formal working groups rather than escalating tensions publicly.
In recent months, US President Donald Trump has repeatedly raised the idea of increasing American control over Greenland, citing security concerns related to Russia and China. At one stage, he warned of potential sanctions against European nations opposing the proposal, though those remarks were later softened.
According to reports, the shift came after discussions with Mark Rutte at the World Economic Forum, where both sides agreed on a framework for possible cooperation involving Greenland and the broader Arctic region, opening the door for continued negotiations between the United States, Denmark, and Greenland.
